Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and DMG MORI extend Innovation Partnership for three more years.
What turns a Formula One car into a winning Formula One car? The armchair reaction tends to be ‘horsepower and downforce’ but the reality of operating at the sharp end of F1 is that everything contributes to victory. It’s horsepower and downforce and chassis and strategy; it’s the skill of the drivers; the graft in the garage; the talents of the designers; it’s also the ultra-efficiency of the factory. https://etqsorz.weebly.com/chrome-for-mac-105-8-download.html.
That last bit sometimes gets overlooked – but the smooth operation of the workshops, the machining halls, the test benches and autoclaves is just as vital to success as a record-breaking pitstop or a gutsy overtaking move. Make no mistake: a Formula One factory that’s working well is a supercharger for channelling talent and technology in at one end and shipping out magnificent racing machines at the other.
And this is why we’re very happy to announce a further three-year extension to our Innovation Partnership with DMG MORI. They have been supplying our factory with CNC cutting machine tools since 2004 and have been an Innovation Partner of ours since 2012 – not only supplying Aston Martin Red Bull Racing with excellent machinery but working with us to improve our operation. We currently use 18 giant DMG MORI machines, with two ultra-high-tech 5-axis mills due to be installed before the end of the year.
A Formula One car has many thousands of unique parts, the majority of which are machined or otherwise fabricated in-house. Given the pace of development within the sport, those parts are constantly being re-designed, upgraded and superseded by something a tiny fraction of a percent better. Thus, our factory operation runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Apart from the FIA-mandated two-week summer shutdown, there is never a moment when the cutting tools are silent.
And this is why robust, reliable and efficient equipment is an essential part of the operation. We extract the maximum from our kit – far more than a conventional machine shop ever would – because we can’t afford to lose the development race; can’t afford to fall behind on the upgrade path. That’s where our Innovation Partnership with DMG MORI has been vital to our successes: not only do they supply us with the most precise and technically advanced equipment on the market; they also have a masterplan for servicing and supporting our mills and lathes, ensuring maximum reliability and minimal downtime. With their input, we’ve had a massive increase in output, purely through process improvements.
“We are excited to extend our Innovation Partnership with DMG MORI,” says Jamie Meades, our Head of Manufacturing. “Having worked with the DMG MORI team since 2004, this renewal means we can build on the relationship to ensure we deliver our continuous improvement plans in the production of components crucial to the performance of our cars.”
Contrary to popular belief, F1 cars are not machined from billets of pure unobtainum – though our designers would wish it otherwise – but the range of materials our mills and lathes have to deal with is eclectic, to say the least. We deal in carbon composites, titanium, magnesium, aluminium and steel – but also at the exotic end of the spectrum, with materials such as PEEK (polyether ether ketone – an organic thermoplastic) and Densamet (an ultra-heavy tungsten alloy used for ballast blocks). Our equipment from DMG MORI copes with it all.
Managing Director of DMG MORI (UK) Steve Finn adds, “We are proud to extend the Innovation Partnership for a further three years, continuing our long relationship with Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and, we are delighted that the technology and service we bring to the partnership is so highly valued.”

Energy-saving machine tools change the global environment
Machine tools are environmentally friendly, clean equipment. As they are generally used for 15 to 20 years, the energy-saving effect affects the environment for a long period of time. DMG MORI has delivered more than 150,000 machines worldwide to this date with a great effort to conserve the global environment. We have achieved an annual reduction of CO2 emissions by 2,650 kg (5,830 lb.) per machine through our continuous approach to cutting down power consumption of the product itself and making our plants energy efficient. We will further work on the reduction of the consumption of woods and CO2 emissions through our packaging reforms and logistics optimization.
Reuse of in-house produced package We reviewed our wood packaging which had been disposed of after it was used only once for the transportation of machines. Now, we employ returnable pallets for overseas shipment and steel packaging for domestic transportation. As a result, we have achieved a reduction of approximately 4,900 tons (10,780,000 lb.) in wood consumption overall. We wrap our cutting-edge machines with the in-house produced sheet with “DMG MORI” logo in hopes of delivering the machines to each of our valued customers in the best condition possible. DMG MORI is the first machine tool manufacturer in Japan to employ its own package sheet. CO2 emissions reduced by logistics optimization Parts produced by about 90 partner companies in Kansai, Tokai, Kanto and Hokuriku areas are gathered at one point in the respective areas, and are collectively transferred by trucks DMG MORI arranges. In this way, CO2 emission was significantly reduced from the previous individual transportation. GREENmode to cut 40% energy consumption We have standardized GREENmode to save energy consumption by approximately 40%. Optimized functions are added in accordance with each machine's application and characteristics, with a focus on 4 items; shortening lead time, visualizing, eliminating idle time and introducing cutting-edge technology. Most significantly we have 9 functions for improving machining conditions and shortening machining time with control technology. With 4 approaches, 1) GREEN control for minimizing machining time with improved conditions, 2) GREEN monitoring for visualization, 3) GREEN idle reduction for eliminating wasted time, 4) GREEN device for applying latest technology, we encourage our customers to enhance productivity and contribute to environmental protection. |

Cutting Dream Contest
Contributions to development of cutting technology and technique
DMG MORI has annually held the “Cutting Dream Contest” since 2004 with the aim of improving and exchanging technologies and techniques throughout the machining industry. All entries were created with machine tools and judged in the following four categories: Industrial Parts Machining, Prototype & Test Cut machining, Modeling (Free Form Machining), and Academic Research. In 2018, which marked the 13th year of the event, a new category, DMG MORI 5-axis Prize, was added.

MTTRF is a non-profit organization recognized by the U.S. Government. Founded in October 2002, it operates through donations from companies, with DMG MORI as its main sponsor. Much of DMG MORI’s philanthropic efforts for education are carried out through MTTRF, such as lending machine tools to universities and research institutions inside and outside Japan, and holding lectures at the annual general meetings. DMG MORI will continue to actively expand research support activities through MTTRF to promote technological development in the industrial society.
In July 2013, MTTRF Berkeley Institute was established for the purposes of enhancing a practical cooperative relationship between industry, government, and academia, and cultivating excellent engineers through educational and research activities.
